Privacy
Last updated 10 October 2026
The short version. You can read this whole site without giving us anything. There are no accounts, no adverts and no cookies, and the only analytics are simple, cookie-free page counts from Cloudflare. We only get your details if you send us a message or leave a comment, and we use them only to reply or to show your comment. We never sell your information.
Who we are
edscriver.com is the author website of Ed Scriver. It is run by Phos Press LLC, Ed’s publisher, which is responsible for the personal information described here. In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Phos Press LLC.
If you have any question about this policy or your information, email privacy@phospress.com.
What this site collects
When you just browse
Nothing that identifies you. This site:
- has no cookies for visitors, so there is no cookie banner (the only cookie is set by Cloudflare’s sign-in on our private admin page, which only we use)
- uses simple, cookie-free page counts (Cloudflare Web Analytics) to see which pages are read and how quickly they load. It uses no cookies or local storage, and Cloudflare states that it does not “fingerprint” visitors or track individuals across websites. It stays off if your browser sends “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control
- has no adverts and no social media “like” buttons or trackers
- serves its fonts from this site, not from Google or another font service
- runs blog search inside your browser: what you type is never sent anywhere
- remembers a few choices in your own browser (the light or dark look you pick with the button in the header, and which posts you have liked); these are kept on your device and are never sent to us
Like every website, our web host automatically records basic technical details when your browser asks for a page, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested. The host uses these server logs to deliver the site and protect it from attacks, and keeps them only for a limited time. We don’t use them to identify or profile visitors.
When you send a message
The contact form asks for your name, email address, the topic you choose and your message. We use these only to read and reply to your message.
The form sends your message to this website’s own server, which checks it for spam and emails it to our inbox through our mail provider. The website itself does not keep a copy. To stop floods of messages we keep a short code, made from a one-way scramble of your IP address and the date, for one day; it can’t be turned back into your address. We may also use Cloudflare’s privacy-friendly spam check (Turnstile) when you send a message; it does not use cookies to track you across sites.
We keep messages only as long as we need them to deal with what you asked, and then delete them.
When you like a post
Blog posts have a Like button. Pressing it adds one to a counter for that post, which anyone can see. To stop one person liking a post over and over, we keep a short code, made from a one-way scramble of your IP address and the date, next to the post you liked for one day; it can’t be turned back into your address, and we use it for nothing else. Whether you have liked a post is also remembered in your own browser, not on our server.
When you leave a comment
Blog posts have a comment form. It asks for a name (it can be any name you choose) and your comment. We don’t ask for an email address and there are no accounts. Every comment is read before it appears. Once approved, your name, your comment and the date are shown publicly under the post, and anyone can read them.
We keep your name and comment on this site until we remove them. To have one removed, email privacy@phospress.com with a link to the post and the comment.
To stop floods of spam we do not keep your IP address. Instead we keep a short one-way code made from it and the date, for one day only, to count how many comments come from one place. We may also ask your browser to pass a short automatic “are you human” check from Cloudflare (Turnstile). See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
We hold comments in a database run for us by Cloudflare, our web host. When a comment is waiting for approval we may email the site owner a copy.
Free books and the newsletter
The free book and newsletter sign-up links take you to books.phospress.com, which is run for us by BookFunnel. When you claim a free book there, you give your email address to BookFunnel and to us, and you agree to receive Ed’s newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email. BookFunnel’s own privacy policy applies on their site.
Buying books
This site doesn’t sell anything directly. If you buy one of Ed’s books, you buy it from a bookshop or retailer (or from Phos Press), and that seller’s privacy policy covers your purchase and payment details. We never see your card details.
Why we can use your information
If you are in the UK or European Economic Area, data protection law requires us to have a legal reason for using your information:
- Replying to your message: our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us, or taking steps you asked for before entering a contract.
- Newsletter: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
- Server logs: our legitimate interest in keeping the site running and secure.
- Legal obligations: where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.
Who else is involved
We share information only with the services that help us run the site, and only as much as they need:
| Service | What it does | What it sees |
|---|---|---|
| Our web host | Stores and delivers the site | Server logs, as described above |
| Web3Forms | Delivers contact form messages by email | What you type into the contact form |
| Our email provider | Holds our business inbox | Messages you send us |
| BookFunnel | Delivers free books and newsletter sign-ups | Your email address, when you sign up |
| Cloudflare | Stores comments and may run a spam check | Your name and comment; the spam check runs in your browser |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone’s safety. If Phos Press were ever sold or merged, your information could pass to the new owner, who would have to respect this policy.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising.
Some of these services are based in, or store data in, the United States and other countries. Where information leaves the UK or EEA, we rely on the service’s legal safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses.
Links to other sites
This site links to other websites, including Substack, Facebook, Bookish Troves, Phos Press and book retailers. Their privacy policies apply when you visit them, and we aren’t responsible for how they handle your information.
Keeping your information safe
The site is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and the little information we hold is kept in password-protected business accounts. No system is perfectly secure, but we hold so little that there is little to lose.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- show you the personal information we hold about you
- correct anything that’s wrong
- delete your information
- stop sending you marketing emails
If you are in the UK or EEA, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your information, to receive a copy in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time. If you live in a US state with a privacy law, such as California, you have similar rights to know, correct and delete, and we will never treat you differently for using them.
To make a request, use the Phos Press data request form or email privacy@phospress.com. We reply within 30 days, and may ask you to confirm your identity first, so we don’t give your information to someone else.
If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority, such as the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK.
Children
This site is meant for general readers and isn’t aimed at children. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us their details, contact us and we’ll delete them.
Do Not Track
We honour “Do Not Track” and Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends either, the page counts are switched off for you.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles information, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date at the top. If a change is significant, such as adding analytics, we’ll say so clearly here first.
